President Lincoln developed a strong bond with his pastor at New York Avenue Presbyterian Church. Rev. Dr. Phineas D. Gurley was a highly regarded preacher of "Old School" theology. In my article published in the Journal of the Abraham Lincoln Association (Summer 2018), I identify key moments in their friendship and show the links between Gurley's preaching and Lincoln's private statement of faith, "Meditation on the Divine Will." I believe that Lincoln wrote this piece to clarify his thinking on how to effectively communicate the religious significance of the need for emancipation to the country's Protestant majority population.
